Differentiation: Finger Grippers
Most robotic waste sorting systems work with suction cups. However, these suffer from sucked fats or other sticky substances related to waste. Finger grippers are much more robust.
Additionally, suction cups can only pick up objects with flat surfaces. But waste objects often don’t have this property. Finger grippers are therefore more reliable to pick up a wider range of objects.
Conclusion: Although finger grippers may be slightly slower compared to suction cups, they require lower maintenance and can reach higher purity levels.
AI-driven Robot
Traditionally, AI is used for classification of the waste objects. We take it one step further: we also use AI to drive the robot.
Grasping a large variety of objects is a non-trivial problem for finger grippers. AI is ideally suited for learning to cope with variety.
Additionally, this kind of AI can learn more complex behaviors, such as pushing back objects when there is too much to handle at that moment, or push away two objects from each other so it is easier to grip one of them. Or even stronger: the behavior can be learned to move away objects from each other for better visibility.
This type of behaviors and the resulting purity will continuously improve over time as the system learns from its experience.
